Ft. Bliss, TX - November 17, 2010 – Coastline Community College, a leading provider of Associate degrees to the military has officially begun ACT Discover testing at William Beaumont Army Medical Center’s Warrior Transition Battalion in Fort Bliss, TX. This complimentary service, offered through the Computer Career Learning Center sponsored by Coastline’s Military Programs, will provide soldiers transitioning back to the force or to civilian life a means to test and explore their career relevant interests, general guidance on resume preparation and academic tutoring resources via the five permanently located computers at the center.
“Soldiers always say, ‘I am not sure what I want to do when I grow up.’ The Computer Learning Center was developed to assist Soldiers with the realization and implementation of their future goals, by providing Career and Personality Assessments”, stated Nicole Merity, MA, Education Counselor. “It has evolved into an outlet for the Soldiers. The computers and internet access is readily available for their use. The Soldiers do not have to wait in line, drive to another location or look for a “wi-fi” signal in the area.”

Coastline Community College already offers CLEP/DSST testing at 6 locations on bases throughout the United States, but these research-based career and personality assessments further extend the college’s mission to provide opportunities to service members through education and assessment. “We’re really excited about the opportunities for soldiers which this center provides. To us (Coastline) it isn’t just about enrollments. It’s about helping soldiers to realize their full potential, especially these Warriors in Transition,” said Dee Reardon, Coastline’s Site Representative.

The college hopes that this center will be the first of many potential Career Learning Centers throughout the United States. The new, state-of-the-art, Career Learning Center will also allow Dependents and Spouses a means to access career and college resources. One of these free resources is Coastline’s Virtual Live Chat with a Counselor, which affords students the opportunity to chat in real time with an academic counselor to better understand how their prior learning and military training can apply as credits toward their degree. Coastline, as a leader in serving the entire military family, already boasts one of the largest and first Military Spouses Programs to provide opportunities to Spouses and Dependents of active duty personnel. According to their website, “Military dependent spouses require and deserve the same types of educational support and opportunities enjoyed by the Servicemembers.”

The Career Learning Center is a real winning addition to the William Beaumont Army Medical Center’s Warrior Transition Battalion. “Education should be a priority and Coastline Community College is an added benefit. My Soldiers can get started here instead of waiting to get out of the U.S. Army. The Computer Career Learning Center is an excellent benefit, morale enhancement and something to look forward to getting the ball rolling for education as a head start. It is a real good program and I believe in it.” stated Cleon F. Windham JR, CPT Infantry BN XO.
