Open Source Consortium Founded in Europe to support Advanced Process Control (APC) Software Solutions
News from the “Open Source” and the Process Automation BusinessAn association with the name “openAPC Foundation e.V.” was established in Dresden, Germany for developing and the distribution of free available Advanced Process Control (APC) software solutions. APC software is used to reveal process deviations and to increase process stability, i.e. during production and manufacturing processes.
The association is founded and supported by leading European companies, known from the semiconductor, solar, automotive and healthcare industry, with the objective to spread this beneficial APC technology to other companies and markets. To support a fast ramp up for the openAPC Foundation, the Landshut Silicon Foundry GmbH (LFoundry GmbH) donated code which can be used immediately without costs.
“Our free available open source APC modules will help manufacturing companies from any markets to improve their productivity without spending high initial costs”, said Bernhard Schimunek, Chairman of the openAPC Foundation e.V.
Further members of the executive council are Manfred Austen and Stephan Eberl. Manfred Austen is the CEO of the “Systema GmbH”, a company specialized on software integration services for process automation. Stephan Eberl is the Director of the IT department of the LFoundry GmbH, a manufacturer for semiconductor products.
The steps to setup this open source consortium were supported by the OSBF (Open Source Business Foundation), represented by Richard Seibt and Ralph Mueller, Director of the Eclipse Foundation in Europe. Due to their profound experiences to establish open source business models, it was possible to develop the structure of the openAPC Foundation very fast and efficient.
The decision to use an ‘open source’ licensing model was based on various advantages for the users. Beyond the key benefit to get professional, high quality software solutions free of charge, the open source licensing model will ensure that continuously new features will be added and can be used by everyone for free. Accordingly, the users of the openAPC Software can spend the efforts and budgets to implement the APC software perfectly into their individual environment. Also suppliers of commercial APC software benefit from openAPC by enhancing the basic features of openAPC modules with commercial applications.
The openAPC Foundation e.V. is a nonprofit organization of companies, experts, users, supporters and individuals who are establishing, supporting and guiding a community for developing openAPC solutions and to accelerate the introduction of new APC methods. The openAPC Software is a free available high quality open source solution to improve productivity by applying Advanced Process Control (APC) technologies.
