Hadoop-as-a-Service

Hadoop-as-a-Service

Hadoop in the cloud offers virtual data storage and carries out analysis on the cloud. Market players have been opting various strategies and taking measures to keep Hadoop in the cloud secure. Cisco and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have joined hands for offering an integrated platform. On the other hand, a new botnet has been discovered that has been exploiting Hadoop enterprise servers and putting a curb to it is necessary. The Hadoop-as-a-service industry has been evolving steadily and would become one of the fastest growing industries across the world. According to the research firm Allied Market Research, the global Hadoop-as-a-service market is expected to reach $16.1 billion by 2020. Following are some of the recent activities that would shape the industry in the coming years.

Cisco-AWS partnership to facilitate the integration of Hadoop with private clouds:

The partnership strategy is one of the effective strategies in offering secure and efficient solutions to customers. Cisco and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have joined forces to provide enterprises with an integrated platform for facilitating the development, security, and connection of Kubernetes clusters across the AWS cloud and private data centers. This new package, Cisco Hybrid Solution for Kubernetes on AWS, offers the combined expertise of AWS, Cisco, and open-source technologies for simplifying intricacies and eliminating hurdles for customers using Kubernetes. David Cope, senior director of Cisco Cloud Platform & Solutions Group (CPSG) outlined that this combination would facilitate deployment of applications on premises and across the AWS in a secure and consistent manner. The collaboration would decrease the integration costs on security and management fronts for customers along with offering insights on how to shift from private to public clouds. This hybrid solution combines Cisco Container Platform (CCP) and Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes (EKS) to enable self-service deployment and management of container clusters.

AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) is integrated to act as a common authentication mechanism and cluster administrator is able to role-based access policies for both. Amazon Elastic Container Registry is used for integrating both environments and offers a secure and single repository for all container images. Moreover, other Cisco options can be integrated into the system. Customers have been running containers and Kubernetes on AWS, outlined Terry Wise, the global vice president of channels & alliances, Amazon Web Services. Customers demand solutions for cloud and Cisco's integration with Amazon EKS would facilitate rapid deployment and run of containerized applications across the AWS cloud and Cisco-based on-premises environments. This partnership would offer solutions that integrate large data sets in public clouds such as Hadoop with private clouds.

New botnet to exploit Hadoop enterprise servers:

Securing the Hadoop enterprise servers has become an utmost necessity as a new botnet has been attacking unsecured servers. Moreover, bots have been planted in vulnerable servers which can be used for launching DDoS attacks. It was spotted by a NewSky Security researcher while it was in its early stages. However, it has been matured and expanded in various servers. According to the security company Radware, the botnet has been spread over 70 servers. These servers scan the internet for Hadoop installations utilizing a Yet Another Resource Negotiator (YARN) module which is misconfigured. YARN is a core component of the Apache Hadoop framework. This component is used in large enterprise networks and cloud computing environments.
Once a botnet determines the vulnerable network, it would make attempts exploit the YARN misconfiguration for installing the bot process on the Hadoop system. Radware has named the botnet as DemonBot. It has been expanded enormously in the past month that it has been attempting nearly a million YARN exploits per day. However, there is no actual count of bots that have impacted Hadoop servers. These bots do not scan and exploit, which results in the generation of noise. Due to lack of detection of noise, researchers are not able to detect and determine the exact number. There is another mystery regarding these botnets. Instead of impact servers of Hadoop with DDoS bots, deployment of cryptocurrency-mining malware would have created huge profits and less legal problems. This is expected to be ‘skids’, which outlines that malware attackers use botnets with the help of readily-available scripts and exploit poor operational security without having a long-term plan in mind.
