Watch care for mechanised (manual and automated) watches.

The official recommendation of suppliers is that mechanical timepieces must be serviced every 3 to 5 years even if it is running well. The basis for it is that in the course of time, the oil that keeps the different watch components lubricated will deteriorate hence increasing the friction between movement's pieces. This will make the watch less correct as well as cause abrasion. While being serviced, the timepiece is taken apart and the movement parts are cleaned chemically. Components are tested and worn out components are replaced. The movement is then reassembled, lubricated and regulated. In the case of mechanical watches, in particular automatic watches, being ever more reasonably priced now and bearing in mind the cost of getting a mechanised timepiece serviced, it could not be cheap to service a cheap mechanised watch.

It is recommended that mechanised timepieces should be wound everyday even if it is not used. A mechanical timepiece works better when it is fully wound than when it is wound down. Winding the timepiece everyday will also avert the movement's lubricants from congealing. When you wind a manual wind watch, you should sense the tension and evaluate whether or not the main spring is full wound. It will take a little bit of practice before achieving success if you are new to owning a mechanised watch. While it is exceptional that the main spring might break from over-winding, it is theoretically possible and does happen once in a while. Automatic timepieces tend not to have this issue.

How to care for quartz timepieces

A quartz watch generally doesn't necessitate much repair as it consists of far less parts than a mechanised timepiece. Almost certainly the only type of upkeep you would ever be required to do is charge the battery. A silver oxide battery will need to be changed bi-annually. A lithium battery can last ten years or more.

Quartz watches are inherently more exact than mechanised watches.
