Parcel Bombs Containing Even PETN Can Now Be Comprehensively Detected

Solutions for the mobile detection of minute traces of explosives (including PETN) in packages, introduced in Dubai.

The recent cases of bombs found in packages with courier services in the UK and Dubai have brought this subject back into the spotlight. One of the packages was transferred in Germany. The paralysation of cargo traffic can only be an extreme temporary measure. Furthermore, X-rays cannot reliably detect certain substances or identify traces of explosives.

People who handle explosives either professionally or illegally are highly contaminated and easy to identify. Packages with explosive contents or items that have been touched by contaminated persons can be identified within seconds. Unfortunately, the combination of equipment used by companies, airports and the authorities leaves a lot to be desired.

Green Dynamics has made a thorough study of the market. Among the offerings available, the independent experts have identified the world's leading device (one that works without a radioactive source). This handy device, called Explonix, comes from the EU and Switzerland, and is a portable explosives trace detector used by airports, border protection forces, personal security, and law enforcement authorities worldwide. It sniffs the air from people, or test papers or objects and directly displays the presence of the tiniest amounts of explosives traces, including PETN.

The false alarm rate in the luggage screening area at airports using Explonix has fallen to nearly zero. It is the only device in the world that continually searches for radiation and thus identifies dirty bombs.

The experts are of the view that that the use of this device could have prevented, for example the transport of the substance used for the killing of Litvinenko by radioactive poisoning in London. The case of the so-called Christmas Bomber, who smuggled the explosive PETN in his underwear aboard a flight from Amsterdam to the U.S., was similarly preventable.

The conclusion of the experts: The higher possibility of being able to detect explosive-contaminated items is the best prevention. Affordable solutions are available.
