“HealthWise” is Producing a Program to Assist Families on Down Syndrome

“HealthWise” Draws Attention to those Serving Individuals with Down Syndrome and their Families.

A genetic chromosomal disorder that causes delays in physical and intellectual development, Down Syndrome affects one in every eight hundred babies. Down Syndrome is caused by an error in cell division occurring at conception and is not related to anything the mother did during pregnancy. Though Down Syndrome cannot be prevented, the health problems that go along with the disorder can be treated and there are many resources within communities to help individuals and their families who are living with the condition.

For parents of a child with Down Syndrome, the diagnosis can be very daunting, but it is important to know, you are not alone. There are many support groups and organizations advocating for individuals with this condition and their families. Your baby will not be very different from other infants, and while the diagnosis may come as a shock it will not be nearly as "life-changing" as the fact that you have a newborn child in general. Though there will be challenges raising a child with Down Syndrome, there will also be many joys. According to “Understanding Down Syndrome: An Introduction for Parents” by Cliff Cunningham “"Between 50 and 75 percent of parents who have had a baby with Down Syndrome report that once over the initial shock they found the experience rewarding and strengthening.”

The Public Television series, “HealthWise,” would like to highlight those providing support and education to individuals with Down Syndrome and their families. The series will offer information, support and advocacy to ensure that all individuals with Down Syndrome have the opportunity to achieve their potential in all aspects of community life.
