New dual channel wireless temperature sensor reduces data centre monitoring costs

New dual channel wireless temperature sensor reduces data centre monitoring costs

Wireless temperature sensors supplied by Spinwave Systems helped reduce energy consumption at a data centre operated by a household name online giant. Energy consumption fell by 16 per cent and carbon emissions by a similar amount following a trial using variable speed (VFD) fans in their servers. Over the 18-month life of the project total IT power load increased 50 per cent (because more servers were added during that time) but the power load for the whole data center increased only 25 per cent, because it used less power for cooling.

The Spinwave Systems wireless sensors were used to provide a more accurate measurement of air temperatures in the vicinity of the servers rather than relying on a single fixed sensor provided by the CRAH unit. In the latter case the VFD fans ran at very low speed highlighting the over cooling provided by the CRAH unit.

The latest version of Spinwave's SWS wireless sensors support two temperature probes, effectively doubling the point count supported per wireless mesh network and reducing the cost of larger installations by almost 50%.

Sensor data is available via SNMP, Modbus, BACnet and LON for easy integration with building automation systems and network management applications.
External temperature probes are designed to be easily mounted at the top, middle and bottom of server racks with magnetic or adhesive sensor clips.

As the demand for monitoring of critical facilities continues to increase, the use of wireless sensor networks is growing due to their ease of installation, flexibility and integration with existing infrastructure allowing customers to quickly and more economically comply with operational and regulatory requirements.

The application takes advantage of some key benefits of wireless mesh networks – speed of installation, flexibility to accommodate changing requirements, lower installed cost due to battery-powered sensors plus easy expansion to accommodate future needs and risk-free coexistence with existing IT equipment
