Uniform Shirts Prices Remain Low Despite Continued Cotton Issue

In April of this year, the global textile market predicted an increase in the price of cotton due to poor production. The great demand for cotton pushed the prices high which is expected to last until the first quarter of 2011 when the new crops are harvested. It was said that if problems and issues continue to prevail then there might still be greater effects in store. Unfortunately since then, problems really has not stopped such as the flood in Pakistan which has caused a great decrease in the output of the world’s 4th largest cotton producer, and now very recently water scarcity is the culprit.

The Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) has recently stated in a fibretofashion.com report that “Water scarcity will cause 15 percent production loss in these regions which will amount to around 1.2 million of cotton bales”. Also, it is expected that the demand for cotton might outpace the supply this year. This is also causing the middlemen who buy the fiber from farmers and export it to textile mills greater problems. Increase in raw materials usually creates a domino-effect on the apparel industry, meaning increase in cotton prices would produce increase in garment prices. On the other hand, apparel manufacturers and retailers with assorted clothing from different raw materials have been able to withstand continued issues with cotton.

Apparently, this continued rise of cotton prices would need for the textile industry to find other ways, like technological innovation and production efficiencies, to offset the bigger input costs.
