Therapeutic Microneedles to Exceed $400 Million in 2013, Says Greystone Research

Press release from: Greystone Research Associates

(Amherst, NH) – Driven by the promise of derivative products that combine microneedles with existing drug delivery platforms, microneedle drug delivery will grow at a rate of 60 percent annually over the next four years, according to the latest estimates from Greystone Research Associates. Much of the growth will come from microneedle products for the delivery of vaccines and will be led by delivery systems that incorporate existing technology.

“While the past decade has seen a host of development programs that emphasized clean-sheet designs and proprietary microneedle technology, the initial wave of commercial success for microneedle delivery is now riding on the coattails of products that are the offspring of converged technologies,” explains George Perros, Greystone Research Managing Director.

The key to recent progress has been the collaboration of leading companies in their respective markets. Most notable examples are the alliance between 3M and VaxInnate that incorporates 3M’s Microstructured Transdermal System in an influenza vaccine patch, and Becton Dickinson’s agreement with Sanofi Aventis to supply BD’s Soluvia prefillable microneedle injection device for the delivery of the latter’s vaccines.

While seasonal vaccines represent the current driving force behind microneedle delivery systems, the highly competitive nature of this segment will make sustained growth for the current class of microneedle devices challenging. “We believe that microneedle delivery applications such as osteoporosis, oncology and gene therapy have a higher potential to eventually achieve long-term profitability for market sector participants,” add Perros.

Greystone’s Microneedles in Medicine: Technology, Devices, Markets and Prospects (http://greystoneassociates.org/Reports/Drug_Delivery/MiM/Microneedles_in_Medicine.htm) study analyzes microneedle drug delivery and diagnostic products, market participants, and key demand and technology factors influencing the commercial market and shaping growth in this sector, and provides forecasts to 2013.
