What's the hardest thing about catching an editor's eye?
Getting someone to throw it to you.
HANOI, Vietnam -- October 22, 2010 -- MichaelEdits.com has declared that October 24 is annual Be Nice To Your Editor Day.
Why should you be nice to your editor? Because nobody else is.
Certainly authors aren't nice to their editors. Otherwise they'd at least make an effort to clean up their own messes before sending those documents out the door. Bare with me, they invite, and I don’t even know them. Nor does the one-armed man who applauds the kindness of strangers. Job descriptions explain that you can work on yourself or with other people. Doctors swear the Oath of Socrates. Bosses shoot from the seat of their pants, and that just opens panda’s box. And hey, they’re in the top 100%.
What’s the difference between an editor and God?
God doesn’t think he’s an editor.
That’s not nice. And honestly, there are many more lawyer jokes than editor jokes. That just means that lawyers are noticed, and that they can even commiserate and take pride in their bad press. Editors are just ignored, neglected, and abused.
Oh, and if it’s a mute point, then why are you talking about it? It’s only going to fall on death ears. And as sales literally explode off the charts, my head will literally explode. Speaking of messes.
So be nice to an editor, if for no other reason than to see the shocked expression on his or her face.
