Dr Sandeep Nayak Receives Times Health Excellence Award – Recognized As Best Surgical Oncologist In India

Bangalore, India
11 January 2019

Renowned oncology surgeon, Dr Sandeep Nayak, has snagged the Times Health Excellence 2018 Award for “Excellence in Oncology”, bolstering his reputation as one of the best surgical oncologists in India. The award is in recognition for his innovative work in Robotic and Laparoscopic cancer surgery.
The award also recognizes his innovative work in robotic thyroidectomy (“RABBIT”) and a robotic oral cancer surgery technique termed “MIND”. He has also popularized the laparoscopic and robotic technique of rectal cancer surgery called intersphincteric resections (ISR), and esophageal cancer surgery, “Three Field Esophagostomy” which produces better outcomes for patients.
Dr Nayak commented: “Being cited as the best surgical oncologist in India comes with great responsibility. I have been able to improve the surgical techniques of several surgeries like breast and gastrointestinal cancer, benefiting many patients not only in Bangalore but from across India and abroad.” He continued: “Most cancer surgeries are major surgeries. They are traumatic and require a prolonged post-surgery recovery. My aim is to treat cancer patients and help them rebuild their life as quickly as possible and provide best possible results.”
The award comes as no surprise to the oncology community. Not only has Dr Nayak been offering hope to cancer patients from across the world, but he has been educating the medical fraternity and society at large, through public speaking in seminars, conferences and interviews about the latest techniques in treating cancer.
An example of his work concerns Rekha (name changed) a 30 year old unmarried woman with a long-standing thyroid swelling who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Although thyroid cancers are common and curable, surgeries for removing the gland usually leave scars on the neck. The “RABBIT” thyroidectomy technique was suitable for her and in just four days after surgery Rekha was back at work. Today she is scar- less, totally free of her tumors and is looking forward to get married.
Oncology surgery is evolving constantly. The challenge is to offer these advanced techniques to those cancer patients awaiting a second chance of life. In that respect, Dr. Sandeep Nayak is at the forefront and richly deserves his public recognition for his efforts to bring quality health care to the needy.
