The Virgin Knitter Exhibition

10-14-2010 12:03 PM CET | Arts & Culture

Press release from: The Textile Arts Center

After a successful opening party and stunning gallery exhibition, “Cutting Edge: Celebrating Textiles”, the Textile Arts Center is preparing for their second gallery exhibition, “The Virgin Knitter”.

“The Virgin Knitter” exhibition will be curated by the artist, Kimberly Hall, who has her master’s in Textile Futures from Central St. Martins in the United Kingdom where her thesis was on thermochromic embroidery. Now, Kimberly is an apparel designer for Coach and The Land Of, a record label. On top of which, Kimberly shares her expertise by teaching classes at 3rd Ward and knitting workshops at the Textile Arts Center, both located in Brooklyn.

The Virgin Knitters Project began in response to an idea Kimberly developed in her textiles masters program at Central Saint Martins. She was struggling on a project about luck, when she realized that the luckiest thing she ever made was her first scarf. It was such a labor of love to learn the process and Kimberly could only ever make one first scarf; it was pretty special. Since then Kimberly has been teaching people how to knit in exchange for their first scarf. The first scarves will then be exhibited and auctioned off this November at the Textile Arts Center.

Kimberly is interested in exploring the questions:
What makes an object lucky?
What makes a garment attractive?
What is appealing about handmade items?
How do I value what something is actually worth?

All of these questions will be addressed by each participant as they go through the act of learning, creating, and selling their own first scarf.

Workshops Dates:

Sat., October 9 -- 2-5PM
Sat., October 16 -- 2-5PM
Thurs., October 21 -- 6-9PM
Thurs., October 28 -- 6-9PM

The mission of the Textile Arts Center is to provide support to fiber artists, and everyday people interested in working with fiber, by acting as a resource facility and creative meeting place.

The Center is situated on Carroll Street between Brooklyn’s leafy Park Slope and the gallery-rich Gowanus neighborhoods. It occupies a newly renovated, 3,200sf space in an old sweater factory. Two giant arched windows designate the street-level gallery and workspace.
With its curved felt-covered walls, custom-designed light grid, and plenty of worktables, the Center is designed to serve the established and emerging creative community of Brooklyn. It features state-of-the-art weaving, screen-printing and dyeing equipment, including 30 multi-harness floor looms, a large vacuum-sealed exposure unit and two fabric-yardage screen-printing tables, plus much more.
As a show of commitment to the fiber arts community, the Textile Arts Center will soon be offering residency positions to outstanding artists in the field, as well as affordable private work spaces with late night access to our studios.
