Newfoundland Rapper puts Gros Morne in First Place in National Video Contest

Ottawa -- The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), with the support of Parks Canada, is counting down to the October 12th close of a video contest that has caught fire through social media, sparking national rivalry as people across the country vie to position their favourite national parks as Canada’s best. Voting at www.celebrateparks.ca to select the contest semi-finalists continues until October 25th.

Celebrate Parks Video Contest represents the most successful social-media-driven video contest by any Canadian nongovernmental environmental organization. Currently, Gros Morne National Park’s “Tales from da Trailz” is sitting as the most voted for video.

Using Twitter, Facebook, email and Youtube, CPAWS has built a friendly national rivalry as Canadians make the case in their creative video entries – ranging from rap songs to stop motion photography -- about why their favourite national park is the greatest.

The contest has caught the attention of wilderness adventurer and award-winning writer Bruce Kirkby who has recently volunteered to help select the winning entries. Kirkby has jumped to his Facebook account and blog to pump up the contest too.

“We’re excited about how well these social media channels have been working for us to get Canadians engaged in sharing their love of our country’s great natural spaces. This opens up new avenues for non-profit groups such as ours to connect with people we might otherwise miss,” says Ellen Adelberg of CPAWS.

Also aiding the contest’s popularity are the top prize of a trip for two down the famed Nahanni River donated by Nahanni River Adventures and runner –up prizes including a flip HD video camera, Parks Canada passes and Mountain Equipment Co-op gift cards.
