Musical sisters shine in New York
Two sisters, both alumnae of TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, are enjoying separate-but-equal success as classical music students in New York City. One is an instrumentalist, the other a vocalist, but both study their art at prestigious schools and are forging promising professional careers in music.Cellist Christine Lamprea, who graduated from TMI in 2007, is in her fourth year at the Juilliard School, where she is working toward a bachelor’s degree in music. Last March, she earned high honors in the Tuesday Musical Club and Young Texas Artists competitions, receiving awards totaling $4,000. During the past summer, she taught promising cellists in Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador for Sinfonia por la Vida, a program of social inclusion through music; studied with four prominent cello teachers at the Banff Center in Alberta, Canada; performed in the Jazz at Lincoln Center series; and participated in the Perlman Music Program, a music festival led by world- famous violinist Itzhak Perlman. This school year, she serves as principal cellist for the Juilliard Orchestra, a position she has held since her second year at the school.
Soprano Stephanie Lamprea, who graduated from TMI in 2009, is in her second year as a voice major at the Manhattan School of Music. Last year, she was chosen to sing with the soprano section of the Cathedral Choir of St. John the Divine in New York. She also received the New Regional Winner (New York) and National Honorable Mention awards from the 2010 National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, youngARTS competition. Onstage, she portrayed the Mother in “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” a Christmas opera produced last year by Sankofa Opera in Harlem, and was chosen as cover soprano soloist for the Manhattan School's performance of Schubert's Mass in G. She was awarded a scholarship for summer study with soprano Catherine Malfitano and gave a recital in August at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, San Antonio. This school year, she will perform in a solo recital and in an operatic duets concert, both at the Manhattan School.
