Driving and Dementia - A Primer for Caregivers

10-03-2010 12:04 PM CET | Health & Medicine

Press release from: The Alzheimer Spouse LLC

Driving with dementia can be as dangerous as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but it is easier to take the keys away from someone who is intoxicated than from someone who has dementia. Due to their illness, a PWD (person with dementia) is generally unable to acknowledge that there is anything wrong with them or their driving, putting those with whom they share the road and the car in danger.

Giving up decades of individual driving freedom by the spouse with dementia is not going to come easily, and places the spousal caregivers as targets of rage, denial, anger, and verbal abuse by their impaired husbands/wives. The “driving issue” can cause more stress, anxiety, and emotional turmoil than any problem associated with being a Alzheimer spousal caregiver.

Joan Gershman, founder of The Alzheimer Spouse website – www.thealzheimerspouse.com – has written a simple, straight forward primer on Driving and Dementia, based upon her 2 year battle to keep her own Alzheimer husband from driving. The primer is backed up by her individual blogs that chronicle the emotional devastation the experience brought to her marriage.
The Alzheimer Spouse Message Boards are filled with stories, support, and information by spouses who have faced this challenge.

Log onto www.thealzheimerspouse.com to read the resource “Dementia and Driving”, as well as the blogs and message board topics related to this most important, life saving issue.

The Alzheimer Spouse LLC/www.thealzheimerspouse.com is the #1 site on the Internet (via Google searches) for support and information for spouses of Alzheimer patients.
