Visible light communication (VLC) is a wireless communication method which uses light fidelity (Li-Fi) technology, to transmit data. The frequency for VLC ranges from 400–800 THz which are visible to human eye. VLC provides high speed communication as light travels faster as compared to other medium. VLC uses traditional bulbs or LEDs to transmit the data. Light rays from traditional bulbs or LEDs does not harm human eye and is resistant to radio frequency interference due to which VLC is an emerging trend in data transmission. Radio frequency has limited spectrum and hence has a lot of data congestion. VLC can be used as a replacement of radio frequency communication. As lights have a numerous residential and commercial applications which includes indoor/outdoor lighting, traffic signals, vehicle headlights/tail lights, commercial displays, and others, the popularity of VLC is growing. VLC has its applications in real estate, healthcare, aviation, infrastructure and transportation sectors. With the increasing demand for smart building concept requiring LED lights, the demand for VLC will increase. With VLC in smart building high speed of data transmission with minimum latency and mobility features can be obtained. Due to minimum latency in data transmission and less susceptible to electromagnetic interference VLC is highly reliable and can be used in transportation and aviation sector. Also, the data can be transmitted over a short distance, the data can be accessed only by the nearby people, therefore security and privacy are maintained. Abundance of available spectrum, easy integration capabilities, secure data transmission and safe in hazardous environments are the major advantages of VLC. National Digital Switching System Engineering (NDSC) and Dongguan Xinda Institute of Integrated Innovation collaboratively developed a commercial chipset for visible light communication with an aim to establish wireless communication where there is LED. February 22, 2018.Geist expands VLC technology to android.

Geist, a Division of Vertiv, a provider of power distribution units (PDUs) announced that its VLC technology is now available for android as well as iOS platforms. The technology uses directed light and optical character recognition to capture the data of PDUs with a smartphone and does not require any network-based communication. This reduces the time required for capturing data, with secure and accurate data capturing and instant viewing, sharing and archiving. The technology is available through Geist mobile application for Geist upgradable PDU users.
