Serbia ranked first by freelancer density, new 2018 market

According to the latest freelancing market research, in 2018, Serbia got the maximum density of digital freelancers on the planet, with 3.52 freelancers per 1000 inhabitants living in the country. Being a nation of 7 million people and 24,605 freelancers, it ranked first in the freelancer penetration chart. Its southern neighbor, Macedonia, felt short by only 0.11 percentage points and ranked second with a penetration rate of 3.41 freelances per 1000 inhabitants.

Why so many Serbs choose to become a digital freelancer is a mystery but one can speculate that a
combination of higher income compared to what they could earn in the local labor market and a higher unemployment rate among youth may be at play here.

In the same ranking, Jamaica and Armenia ranked fourth and third with 2.43 and 2.18 freelancers per 1000 inhabitants while United States ranked fifth with a penetration rate of 1.72 freelancers.

In terms of categories and subcategories in which freelancers tend to work, the most popular subcategory is "web development" with more than 300.000 digital freelancers working in it. "Data entry" is the next most popular subcategory while "graphic design" and "article and blog writing" rank third and fourth.
