Press release from: National Pharmacy Association

National Pharmacy Association

National Pharmacy Association

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) today convenes experts from around the country to advise Department of Health officials about community pharmacy’s role in public health, ahead of the public health white paper.

A growing body of evidence of the benefits of pharmacy interventions will be presented, including new results from the ‘Healthy Living Pharmacies’ project in Portsmouth, which show that innovation is delivering quality and productivity around prevention.

NPA chairman Ian Facer is co-chairing the event with Paul Edmondson-Jones, Director of Public Health at Portsmouth PCT. Ian said:

“The intention today is to spell out why community pharmacies should move to centre stage in improving public health and tackling health inequalities. The sector’s potential is beginning to be realised in some localities - as we will hear from many contributors today. The policy and commissioning challenge is how to take what’s happening in some places to every place, so that the whole population can benefit more from this uniquely positioned network with so much to offer.

Chief Pharmaceutical Officer, Dr Keith Ridge, who will speak at the event, said:

“There is a growing track record of pharmacies supporting health improvement. I encouraged the NPA to organise today’s roundtable so that my Department of Health colleagues charged with the public health agenda can hear directly from community pharmacy practitioners about the progress being made.”

The roundtable features presentations from Keith Ridge, Paul Edmondson-Jones, Alistair Murray of Green Light Pharmacy and other pharmacists at the cutting edge of pharmacy-based public health. There will be detailed discussion about:

• Harm reduction services ( including substance misuse, syringe exchange programmes and alcohol services)
• Sexual health services (including the supply of emergency hormonal contraception and chlamydia testing and treating services)
• Pharmacy-based screening services (including for vascular risks and cancers)
• Vaccination programmes delivered by community pharmacy (including seasonal and pandemic influenza and Hepatitis B)
• Support for behavioural change (including Health Trainers in community pharmacy, stop smoking and weight management services)

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) was established in 1921 as the trade association of community pharmacy owners. Its core purpose is to represent, support and protect the interests of all community pharmacy across the UK.
