Taiwan ranks 4th in BERI global investment report

Taiwan is the world’s fourth best place to invest in, trailing only Switzerland, Singapore and Norway, according to the latest Business Risk Service report released by U.S.-based Business Environment Risk Intelligence S.A.

The BRS report, issued every April, August and December, evaluates whether nations are worthy investment destinations by assigning them an overall “profit opportunity recommendation.”

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, in the latest BRS survey Taiwan received a POR score of 71, one point higher than its score in April, and the fourth highest score among the 50 nations surveyed.

Taiwan’s political stability and continued close relationship with mainland China were responsible for the country’s strong performance in the report, the MOEA noted. The BERI gave Taiwan a 1B rating, placing it in the “favorable investment destination” category.

In the three sub-indices the POR was based on, Taiwan advanced two spots in both the operations risk and political risk index, finishing at No. 3 and No. 11, respectively. In the foreign exchange risk index the nation remained in its previous place at No.3.

The BERI forecast Taiwan’s economy growth rate to hit 6.8 percent this year on the back of rising exports and private consumptions. The unemployment rate is projected to drop below 5.5 percent in 2011.

In terms of the country’s political risk, the BERI said it has been effectively controlled with the cross-strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement in place. The U.S. is also expected to continue its arms sales to Taiwan over the next two years, the report said.

In addition, Taiwan’s remittance and repatriation risk has been stabilized, the BERI said. With the government’s investment promotion campaign kicking off and the recent reduction of business income tax to 17 percent, the country is anticipated to become a more lucrative destination for foreign investors.

The BRS reports provide comprehensive risk assessments of 50 important economies. The reports are used by international businesses and executives when trying to decide whether to invest in a particular country.
