M&A activity continues to dominate the headlines, with news from Latin America, North America, Asia and Europe (from Denmark, Germany and Spain). Highlights include TNT's purchase of Mercúrio, the express market leader in Brazil and reports that Schenker might be on the acquisition trail across Europe.

Among the contract wins reported this week were wins in the automotive, energy, aerospace, agriculture, healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, whilst in property and real estate, developments have been announced in North America, the Middle East, Asia and Europe.

Elsewhere, Scania has received a major truck order from a leading logistics company, Motorola has completed its acquisition of Symbol Technologies, Dell is expanding in Singapore and UPS have named David Abney as their new Chief Operating Officer.

Urban Transport Policy in Europe: Meeting City Demands for Green Logistics

New Research from Analytiqa

Urban Transport Policy in Europe: Meeting City Demands for Green Logistics takes an in-depth look at the current initiatives and legislation currently being planned and implemented across twenty cities in twelve European countries across both West and Eastern Europe.

The issues addressed are those that will have the greatest impact on providers working within the express, logistics or supply chain arena. It is critical that hauliers, courier and express, logistics and distribution companies across all sectors understand and account for changes in their operational environment.

This report will assist decision makers within these organisations to ensure correct future investment into vehicles, resources, strategies and services that are not only compliant with future environmental legislation (Euro 4, Euro IV, Euro 5, Euro V, etc) and developments, but more importantly, are considered and hence able to take full advantage of some of the opportunities the future, 'greener', market will provide.

ProLogis Leases 200,000 Square Feet in China to DHL

11 January 2007 - ProLogis has leased 18,600 m2 of industrial space in China to DHL. DHL will occupy a newly developed warehouse at ProLogis Park Lingang, located outside Shanghai near the Yangshan deepwater port complex. DHL will use the facility as a primary distribution point for goods leaving and entering China via ocean freight. The first two buildings at the park are now 100.0% leased.

DHL's parent company, Deutsche Post World Net, is ProLogis' largest global customer, with leases in 65 locations in North America, Asia and Europe.

The Chinese government designed the Yangshan deepwater port specifically to accommodate new generations of container vessels that are too large to dock at Waigaoqiao Port in Shanghai. Yangshan, which opened in December 2005, was built on a collection of islands off the Chinese coast and is connected to the mainland by a 20-mile sea bridge. At full buildout, it will be the largest container port in the world, with a total planned capacity of approximately 25.0 million containers annually.

ProLogis Park Lingang is being developed in the Lingang Industrial Area, a large-scale, government-sponsored development on the land-side end of the Yangshan bridge. The park, which is owned via a joint venture, currently comprises two distribution centres totalling 50,600 m2. A third building totalling 10,200 m2 is currently under construction.

ProLogis entered China in 2004 and has since established a leading position as a provider of industrial distribution facilities. At September 30, 2006, it had 383,000 m2 in operation and another 281,000 m2 under development. In addition to DHL, major customers in China include adidas, L'Oreal, Menlo Worldwide, Nokia, NYK, Samsung, UPS and Yum! Brands.
