New Age Imagers LLC is pleased to announce that its Gale Force line of Laser Engravers now have the capability of integrating the X-Rite i1 Spectrophotometer. The i1 automatically collects halftone characteristics from output images and can be used to greatly reduce both spoilage and make-ready time.

Using a spectrophotometer to measure pad printed halftone dots is an industry first. Coupling the i1’s capabilities with the only laser engraver driven by a “raster engine” will simplify pad printing both four-color process and ultra-high resolution images.

Printed halftone dots measured with the i1 are analyzed by software designed to automatically create calibration curves in the Raster Image Processor (RIP). These curves facilitate compensation for variables such as pads, inks and substrates. The Gale Force Laser Engraver responds to the curves and precisely adjusts halftone values for both optimum image reproduction and life-like color.

“We are extremely excited to offer pad printers this level of precision and control for their CTP workflow,” said Jeff Kohnke of New Age Imagers. “Manipulating calibration curves within the RIP has been the de facto standard in offset printing for years, but has never before been available to companies producing high-quality pad printed images with laser plates.”

New Age Imagers produces computer-to-plate laser engraving systems for the pad printing industry. Inclusion of the spectrophotometer into the process of engraved plate making provides precise and efficient dot gain control and allows for application of digital color management techniques within the CTP workflow.
