An interesting alternative to expensive GPS or bulky localization systems: Enabling Google Maps in daily business processes and personal workflows

By using just a standard WAP compatible mobile phone the open source process integration suite AgilPro (www.AgilPro.eu) enables the display of any locations on Google Maps while the actor himself is far away from the computer. A Google Maps adapter used for example by courier services, where the dispatcher will always want to know where his bikers are situated at or are heading to next!

See the showcase on http://www.e-mundo.de/en/agilpro-demo.html (Demo 7). A business process model ("Bike Courier Model") as well as a simulation of the process with Google Maps can be downloaded. Here you can look at each of the two mini-processes: the process from the perspective of the dispatcher and the process from the perspective of the biker.

The model:

Two roles are interacting with each other: the dispatcher and the bikers. The role of the dispatcher is displayed with a blue pawn, the role of the biker with a yellow pawn. You can see the different data as icons (blue, where input data is needed; green, where data is processed automatically by the system), actions of dispatcher or bikers are displayed with bubbles, applications that are linked with the modell are displayed with a box with a little gearwheel inside.

The simulation:

The dispatcher has to feed his location into the application's GUI initially. The rest of the process is then automatically looped. The dispatcher will see the bikers' locations on Google Maps (using personalized pins), refreshed each time the bikers give in their new locations.

Each biker provides his location data via SMS (in the showcase it is demonstrated on the computer) after having logged into the system with its own personal code. The information is transferred automatically and wirelessly (WAP) to the AgilPro Server.

Special: This AgilPro Google Maps adapter used for example by courier services allows its use without any additional programming. The Generic User Interface and adapters are standard application software of open source simulation tool AgilPro.

First user reactions have been extremely positive. The modell is a very easy and seamless way to integrate Google Maps in daily business processes and personal workflows. For example it allows courier services to track their bikers while they are on tour without using expensive GPS or unhandy localization systems.
