Press release from: Faces without Places

Cincinnati, OH — July 28, 2010 — Faces without Places (FwP) in conjunction with Project Connect will host a Cultural Fest in Cincinnati on July 28, 2010. The Cultural Fest is a celebration of Project Connect’s summer enrichment program for homeless children.
“The children have spent the summer learning about Iraq, Egypt, Cincinnati, and Ohio,” Project Connect Director Karen Fessler said. “The Cultural Fest is an opportunity for the public to see how homeless children in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky spent their summer and it showcases the positive impact of keeping children connected to academics and exposing them to life enriching opportunities during the long days of summer.”
The theme for the cultural fest is “Building a healthy community; starting with me, my neighborhood and my nation” and will bring together homeless families, community partners, educators, and the community. The entertainment presented by the children will be “Are you Smarter than a Project Connect Camper?” and will feature local celebrities who will be tested on their knowledge of Ohio, Egypt, and Cincinnati. The event is July 28th from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm and will begin at Douglass Elementary School. The event proceeds 1 ½ blocks to the Project Connect location at 2625 Alms Place for the remainder of the event. For more information or to RSVP, contact Shelley Werner at 513.363.3313 or visit www.faceswithoutplaces.org

About Faces without Places: Faces without Places (FwP) was founded in 1998 as an education-focused foundation supporting Project Connect, a program for homeless children at Cincinnati Public Schools. FWP serves homeless children, ages birth to 17, and some special needs homeless students to age 22 by providing valuable funding and awareness for enrichment, summer programming, transportation, uniforms, supplies, enrollment assistance, and field trips. Our mission is to keep children experiencing homelessness connected to their education. Our goal is school stability: one student, one school, one year. FWP assists up to 3,000 children annually, and has served more than 24,000 children experiencing homelessness since 1998. For more information visit www.faceswithoutplaces.org
About Project Connect: Project Connect, part of Cincinnati City Schools, is the only program in Greater Cincinnati exclusively serving children experiencing homelessness. Founded in 1996, Project Connect provides advocacy paired with specialized educational services and lifestyle enrichment opportunities for children who have neither a voice, nor a choice in being homeless.
Other: Project Connect held its 13th annual Summer Program from June 7 – July 29th. Approximately 75 children, ages 5-12, from 10 homeless shelters and/or motels in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky participated.
A healthy breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack were provided to the children each day. Each morning focused on reading, math & cultural studies, while afternoons were used for enrichment activities such as trips to the pool, or other attractions. One day per week the children were taken on a field trip to places like Kings Island, a Reds baseball game, Coney Island, and many more.
