SGS Successfully Conducts Time of Flight Diffraction Seminar in Shanghai

The SGS NDT Training & Examination Center successfully conducted a Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) seminar in the Gloria Plaza Hotel Kangqiao in Shanghai, China on May 24, 2010. By holding seminars on NDT applications, SGS keeps promoting the importance of continuous education of NDT technicians.

The SGS NDT Training & Examination Center successfully held a Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) seminar in Shanghai, China on May 24, 2010. The seminar focused on the NDT method for the detection of flaws, namely the Time of Flight Diffraction. Moreover, the seminar contained discussion sessions on European regulations and standards and has attracted numerous enterprises.

The TOFD seminar was conducted by Norbert Trimborn, the president of the Authorized Qualifying Body of the TOFD Examining Committee and head of special examinations at SGS. He explained the in-service and pre-service applications of TOFD as well as the advantages and disadvantages of this method.

After the seminar attendees had the chance to visit the SGS Materials Testing Laboratory in Shanghai and were introduced the laboratory capabilities.

About Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD)

Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) is an Ultrasonic Testing Technique originally developed to increase the sizing accuracy of flaws previously detected by conventional NDT techniques. By now TOFD has become one of the most important methods for flaw detection and is accepted worldwide. In many cases it has replaced on-site radiography as TOFD has strong advantages in terms of safety, required time of inspection and costs.
