Place the flower stems under running water and cut off one inch of each stem at a 45-degree angle and remove any excess foliage that falls below the waterline.

Find A Florist also recommends placing flowers in a cool spot out of direct sunlight and away from any ripening fruit, which gives off a gas called ethylene and shortens the lifespan of flowers. Every other day, trim off 1/4 inch of the stems at a 45 degree angle under running water.

The growth of bacteria within vases is the number one reason flowers die quickly. To prevent bacteria buildup, replace flowers' water everyday, or try adding a tiny amount of bleach to the arrangement to keep bacteria out and make the floral gift last longer.
