Taiwan places No. 2 in Asia for investment environment

Taiwan was named fourth-best investment destination in the world by U.S.-based Business Environment Risk Intelligence (BERI), according to an announcement by the Ministry of Economic Affairs on May 26. Moving up one notch from fifth place last year, Taiwan is currently tied with the Netherlands and behind only Switzerland, Singapore and Norway. In the latest BERI report, Taiwan again earned a composite score of 70 points, meaning it was “suitable for investment.”

BERI’s evaluation of a country’s investment environment is based on three major indices: operations risk, political risk and foreign exchange risk. In the political risk index, Taiwan maintained a rank of 13th worldwide, same as that in December 2009. However, in anticipation of the economic cooperation framework agreement to be signed between Taiwan and mainland China, BERI forecast that the island’s political risk index will improve next year and result in a higher overall ranking.

In the forex index, Taiwan advanced one place from the previous survey to third worldwide, mostly due to last year’s excellent performance in exports and a surge in merchandise trade surplus.

Additionally, in the area of operations risk, Taiwan placed fifth in the world and second in Asia only to Singapore. This is attributable to expected political stability with no major risks in 2010 and 2011, along with signs of recovery in external demand and internal consumption following the global financial crisis and economic downturn.
