Taiwan attends the World Health Assembly meeting as an observer
The 63rd World Health Assembly (WHA) will convene in Geneva from May 17 to May 21. At the invitation of the World Health Organization (WHO), a delegation led by Yaung Chih-liang, Minister of the Department of Health (DOH) of the Republic of China (Taiwan), is taking part in the meeting as an observer. The DOH noted that the theme of this year’s gathering is Health-related Millennium Development Goals, focusing on the status of progress toward the WHO’s various goals and challenges that lie ahead. Minister Yaung intends to deliver a speech on this theme, sharing Taiwan’s experiences and achievements and calling for a concerted global effort to narrow gaps between individuals’ and countries’ access to medical care and public heath resources, so as to protect the health rights of all human beings. In bilateral talks held in the afternoon of May 17, Minister Yaung and his mainland Chinese counterpart Chen Zhu reached a number of consensuses regarding such issues as anti-virus vaccines, food safety and the signing of agreements on cooperation in the field of public health. He also invited Minister Chen to Taiwan to learn about medical services in Taiwan’s remote areas and Taiwan’s health insurance system. Minister Yaung also met with health officials from Honduras, Singapore, Guatemala and Haiti. He promised that Taiwan would donate 2 million doses of H1N1 influenza vaccine to Guatemala and would help Haiti rebuild its public health and disease prevention system.
The DOH stated that, at this year’s WHA meeting, Taiwan’s delegation will stress the need for participation of Taiwan’s experts in WHO activities with a view to boosting international cooperation in medical and public health affairs. The delegation will also take part in discussion of technical issues on this year’s agenda of concern to the people of Taiwan. These include pandemic influenza preparedness, implementation of the International Health Regulations, food safety, tuberculosis control, counterfeit medical products, prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, and viral hepatitis. It is hoped that by exchanging experiences regarding such matters, Taiwan can keep abreast of the latest developments and more effectively safeguard the health and welfare of its people.
