Sinotrans wins logistics contract with Metro in China

20 November 2006 - Sinotrans and Metro will introduce Metro’s Procurement Logistics solution to China, which will be available to other retailers and suppliers operating in the country

Sinotrans has won a strategic cooperation deal with METRO Jinjiang Cash & Carry, a subsidiary of the retail giant METRO Group. Under the deal, Sinotrans will become METRO Jinjiang's sole dry-food and non-food logistics operator in China. This will entail Sinotrans forwarding products from approximately 1,000 suppliers to METRO’s 33 retail outlets across China.

The Sinotrans contract win has ended a month long bidding race between multinational and local logistics providers to become the Company’s dry-food and non-food forwarder in China. The contract term is for an indefinite period. METRO Group Logistics has developed a tailor-made logistics solution for retail operators named Procurement Logistics, a programme that has already proved successful in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Turkey, Russia and Spain, and will now be introduced to China and operated by Sinotrans.

Since its entry into the Chinese market, METRO has been adjusting its logistics management on goods delivery, operating a model whereby suppliers either deliver goods directly to stores or to a distribution centre from where they are forwarded on. As the number of METRO outlets in China expand, the Company needs to streamline its goods-delivery system, which is why the Procurement Logistics solutions are being introduced to the country.

Under the deal, Sinotrans will build a logistics network of nine warehouses and will identify transport routes so that the Company’s 33 stores are covered. The network will provide a stable and economic logistics services for METRO. As part of the contract, the procurement logistics network, which will be jointly built by Sinotrans and METRO, will not only serve METRO but also other retailers and suppliers in China who wish to join the network; sharing operating costs and risks.
