Portable Storage Takes On Iron Man 2
KANSAS CITY, MO. (May 11, 2010) – "Iron Man 2" is box office gold—and it's permeating the consumer market mindset. Everyone from AC/DC to Burger King to smartphone maker LG is getting in on the "Iron Man 2" buzz.
The National Portable Storage Association is having its own fun with the release of "Iron Man 2," taking the opportunity to educate business consumers about the benefits of steel containerized storage. While iron is an element, steel is an alloy. Steel is made from iron and carbon, making it relatively invincible to weather elements and keeping stored goods safe and sound.
"With the blockbuster success of 'Iron Man 2,' we can see the durability of iron in action. Portable storage units—not the consumer-oriented mobile storage units which are often made of wood—are as stronger than iron. They are as strong as steel—because they are made of steel," says John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "It's tough to penetrate a portable storage unit."
Portable storage is typically an ISO standard shipping container that's durable enough to sit outside 24/7/365. Consumer mobile storage is a lighter box that's generally kept in a climate-controlled warehouse. Most portable storage containers have a lifetime of 30 to 40 years. They are bigger and more durable than mobile storage containers, so they are more suitable for commercial use. Portable storage containers are typically delivered on a trailer rather than a moving truck.
"Portable storage operators may have a 20-foot container and cut that down to 16-foot pretty easily to compete with mobile storage units," Finnessy says. "They can tailor their inventory in that direction. With the economy the way it is, people are looking for any way they can to generate revenue. It's worth exploring the possibilities."
