In value terms, grape imports stood at $9B in 2017. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Over the period under review, grape imports attained its maximum level in 2017, and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Grape Imports By Country

In 2017, the U.S. (547K tonnes), Russia (382K tonnes), Germany (332K tonnes), the Netherlands (300K tonnes), the UK (271K tonnes), China, Hong Kong SAR (237K tonnes), China (234K tonnes), Canada (181K tonnes), Thailand (147K tonnes), France (146K tonnes), Poland (115K tonnes), and Pakistan (107K tonnes) were the major importers of grapes in the world, mixed up 68% of total import.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Thailand (+19.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($1.7B) constitutes the largest market for imported grapes worldwide, making up 19% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($714M), with the share of 8% of global imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with the share of 8%.

In the U.S., grape imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2007-2017. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+1.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+2.1% per year).

Grape Import Prices By Country

The average grape import price stood at $2,028 per tonne in 2017, approximately reflecting the previous year level. Over the last ten years it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, when import increased by 11% y-o-y. Global import price peaked of $2,186 per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination; the country with the highest import price was the U.S. ($3,145 per tonne), while Pakistan ($577 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by Pakistan (+12.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
