Fig Imports

The imports totaled 132K tonnes in 2017, flattening at the previous year level. Overall, it indicated a strong expansion from 2007 to 2017: the total imports volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, fig imports decreased by +0.3% against its level of 2015. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when imports increased by 18% year-to-year. Global import peaked of 138K tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, fig imports amounted to $574M in 2017. In general, it indicated a strong expansion from 2007 to 2017: the total imports value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Global import peaked in 2017, and are expected to retain its growth in the immediate term.

Fig Imports By Country

France (17K tonnes), Germany (17K tonnes), India (13K tonnes), the U.S. (8.9K tonnes), and the UK (8.1K tonnes) represented roughly 48% of total imports of figs in 2017. Italy (4.8K tonnes), the Netherlands (4.5K tonnes), Canada (4.4K tonnes), Russia (4.3K tonnes), Switzerland (3.7K tonnes), Austria (3K tonnes), and Belgium (3K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by India (+11.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($101M), Germany ($63M), and France ($58M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2017, with a combined 39% share of global imports. The U.S., the UK, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

The U.S. (+18.9% per year) had the highest growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 10 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Fig Import Prices By Country

The average fig import price stood at $4,348 per tonne in 2017, growing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2017 it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when it surged by 16% y-o-y. Global import price peaked in 2017, and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination; the country with the highest import price was India ($7,958 per tonne), while Russia ($1,804 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by the U.S. (+8.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
