Worldwide 3D cell cultures Market

By adding the third dimension to a cell’s environment develops substantial differences in the characteristics and behavior of the cells. 3D cell cultures are artificially-created environment wherein the biological cells are allowed to grow or interact with their surrounding environment from all the three directions. Significantly, such differences usually create much greater similarity amongst the living organism and the cultured cells, the cells are meant to represent – resulting in much relevant and useful data. Dissimilar to 2D environments, such as petri dish, a 3D cell culture lets cells in vitro to grow from all dimensions, just like the way they would in vivo. Cells in 3D environments are quite similar to cells in a living organism than flat, unnaturally tapered.

Shape – Typical 3D cells are ellipsoids with dimensions of 10-30 μm. Whereas, 2D cells are flat and have thickness of 3 μm.

Environment – Distinctive 3D cells have approximately 100% of their surface area exposed to other cells or matrix. On the other hand, 2D cells have almost 50% of their surface exposed to fluid.

Behavior – Behavioral differences in 3D cells as compared to 2D cells are: drug metabolism, expression (gene, protein), in vivo relevance, general cell function, morphology, response to stimuli, proliferation, and viability.

The cell cultures are grown in bioreactors that are small capsules in which the cells are able to grow in spheroids and 3D cell colonies. Every bioreactor has approximately 300 spheroids cultured. The two general platforms of the 3D culturing methods are:

Also, scaffold techniques consists of solid scaffolds, hydro-gels and several other materials; whereas non-scaffold techniques include hanging drop plates, low adhesion plates, micro-patterned surfaces, magnetic 3D bioprinting magnetic levitation and rotating bioreactors.
