DS web service Oxygen.next now supports open standards

Open standards are the key to the development of barrier-free technologies since they’re easily accessible to everybody, extendible and can be applied in diverse environments. In the internet sector the SMIL standard („Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language“), that allows to prepare multimedia files for the playout on digital signage players, is well-established. Oxygen.next, the free-of-charge digital signage web service by the German software provider 42media group, now enables the user to export the entire program that he has created with the operation software Oxygen Management Suite (OMS) to SMIL and Media RSS format.

„Via SMIL third party manufacturers can connect their players to our system, the Oxygen Media Platform“, explains 42media group-CEO Matthias Wagner. Multimedia content can thus be displayed on digital picture frames, scales or coin trays. There’s no need to install specific software on these devices. Annoying cables will disappear since they can even be applied wireless. That makes users much more flexible in selecting their player and screen locations.

Users don’t have to forego the OMS features that they’re accustomed to: The operation software’s extensive scheduling functions can be used on SMIL and Media RSS players, too. Some devices even support the integrated monitoring and reporting features. Both static and dynamic content formats such as images, videos or templates are suitable for the SMIL and Media RSS export function.

In co-operation with the renowned digital signage hardware manufacturer IAdea 42media group is up to promote Oxygen.next internationally – together with the output devices of the Taiwanese company. “IAdea firmly supports SMIL as the de facto standard for digital signage. Interoperability via open standards will help drive down hardware cost for digital signage networks and accelerate return on investment”, says IAdea-CEO John Wang. “Oxygen.next offers an exciting service that we would like to align our efforts with. We definitely see great potential working with 42media group.”

In the future not only the users of the free-of-charge web service Oxygen.next will benefit from the innovations. “Within the next four weeks we’ll make these features available to our business customers as well”, knows Matthias Wagner. Software development is still running at full speed: Shortly Media RSS content will not only be exportable from the OMS but also importable. Media RSS feeds freely available on the internet can thus be easily integrated into the program then, for example.
