Operation Overhaul: How RestonLogic Swapped Out a Monolith for a Microservices-Based Application

RESTON, Va. - Sept. 24, 2018 -- Monolithic or legacy systems - often built with large clunky components - can slow companies down (or even stop them in their tracks) especially if they need to scale up, scale down, or duplicate the app and stand it up on more machines.

The Job: Tear down a legacy system and rebuild it as a new app with a microservices-based architecture

The Client: California-Based Company (with big dreams but no-so-big budget)

“Adding new features or functionality to a monolithic application can impact the entire system… “ explains Brian Tunison, RestonLogic's Director of Service Delivery & Design. “On the other hand, microservices (made with many small parts) can be independently built, tested, deployed and maintained in different programming languages which allows developers to segment and isolate software and scale them independently.”

Phase One: RestonLogic evaluated the company’s software, quality assurance, and networking, and got some really valuable input from the client.

Phase Two: RestonLogic worked with testing teams to design a microservices solution using Kubernetes (the initial blueprint spec’d during discovery was spot on)

Phase Three: RestonLogic built an architecture using Terraform plus KOPs to deploy clusters in multiple AWS regions to enhance availability, security and latency.

Note: RestonLogic also evaluated Rancher and new AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) service, but EKS is currently not available in AWS China, so the client stuck with KOPS.

Architecture Components:

Kubernetes — Open-source container-orchestration system for automating deployment, scaling and management of containerized applications.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) Regions — AWS has dozens of data centers spread across availability zones (AZs) in regions across the world. An AWS region is a collection of AZs located in geographic proximity connected by low-latency network links.

Terraform — Infrastructure as code software by HashiCorp. It allows users to define a datacenter infrastructure in a high-level configuration language, from which it can create an execution plan to build the infrastructure.

Kops (Kubernetes Operations) — Tool to create, maintain and destroy Kubernetes clusters in AWS. Kops can create the network for you, then you will need to connect to your corporate VPC and modify your routing tables in all subnets.
