Press release from: Weitz & Luxenberg

New York Mesothelioma Law Firm

New York Mesothelioma Law Firm

New York mesothelioma law firm Weitz & Luxenberg recently settled the mesothelioma cancer case of a deceased Brooklyn construction worker for $2.16 million. The construction worker died last year from the asbestos cancer- mesothelioma.

The deceased worker was exposed to asbestos on a regular basis over 40 years ago as he did construction work at locations such as the World Trade Center, the Union Carbide Building and two international airports. Construction areas often contain airborne asbestos fibers because many buildings had asbestos-containing materials. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause fatal illnesses such as lung cancer, pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma. Asbestos exposure can be avoided by the use of protective gear such as masks and respirators. Shockingly however, many companies that worked with asbestos products and knew about the lethal dangers of the substance failed to provide workers with masks.

Indeed, while the construction worker was alive, he told Weitz & Luxenberg mesothelioma attorneys about his working conditions. An excerpt of the discussion follows:

Q. Did you ever use a mask or respirator on the job?
A. No. I should have. All they [fellow tradesmen] did was make dust and during cleanup, we swept it up. That's about it. Dust.

About Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma cancer is primarily an occupational disease that kills 90,000 people worldwide every year. In the U.S., approximately 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year. Often, mesothelioma is diagnosed 30 or 50 years after exposure to asbestos has taken place. Treatment options are generally limited by the time mesothelioma is diagnosed. Mesothelioma sufferers usually die within two years of being diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer. Mesothelioma has struck thousands of retired workers from the construction, automotive, railroad and maritime industries.
