1 Market Square Project In Hailsham Celebrates 10th Anniversary

03-10-2010 11:44 AM CET | Politics, Law & Society

Press release from: Terry Hall, Hailsham Town Council

Hailsham’s most widely used youth facility celebrated its 10th anniversary in January 2010.

Youth project staff joined with town councillors and other invited guests at 1 Market Square on Saturday 6th February, where they marked the youth facility’s achievements by holding a multimedia presentation, outlining the project’s achievements over the past decade.

Officially opened in January 2000, the 1 Market Square project was set up by Hailsham Town Council to improve the quality of life for young people aged 14 to 25 years in Hailsham and surrounding rural villages. Such benefits are achieved through the integrated provision of accommodation, recreation, and opportunities for personal and social development, training for employment, information and advice.

The 1 Market Square building accommodates The Square Youth Café (a café-style meeting place), Infopoint (an information drop-in facility), and the Hailsham Foyer (supported accommodation for up to six young people). Coordinated by Hailsham Town Council, the project has links with other agencies, including YMCA, Connexions and the Friday Night Project.

Guests at the afternoon presentation included representatives from Connexions Sussex and Hailsham Community College. Members of the public were invited to come along and there were above average attendance levels.

Andy Joyes, the Town Council’s youth project coordinator, said “The 1 Market Square project exists for youth workers to support young people through their experience of social education and in their transition from childhood to adulthood.”

The Mayor of Hailsham, Cllr Dr Ian Haffenden said “The 1 Market Square facility aims to provide activities - which are both leisure and issue based - and meet the multitude of needs that the young people put forward us on a regular basis. The 10th anniversary of the youth project will mark a decade of hard work and solid achievement of these aims.”
