A new study says knockoff consumer goods have become a huge target online, with law firm SeriousStrike finding some 1,5000 counterfeit selling listings for only one brand.

Along with the growing of consumer goods industry developing, brand owners seek for lower manufacturing price in countries like China, Vietnam and Indonesia, but they encounter the risk of being infringed by the copycats in these countries, bring fire to their own backyards.

“Because of the lack of IP law concept, as well as the low intellectual crime cost, these OEM factories manufacture the product on their own, and of course, without product development cost, advertising cost, etc. They sell their product in a much lower price.” Concluded by SeriousStrike, “Some even register trademark and patent before the origin right owner.”

The report goes on to say that most of these knockoff products are actually being saled in their origin market place — in most occasions US and EU. That breaks down to 38 percent of the online clone listings being posted in Europe, versus 26 percent in US.

“Most famous TV commerce products get most serious harm by these grey market transactions, these products contain high value, which makes dozens of copycats go after them, making counterfeits and sell abroad.”

Entrepreneur Reggie’s company have their product LED bowling ball manufactured in China, their Chinese partner registered the patent in China, which caused them many troubles even after stop loss strategies. “If they built a complete IP web before they step in market of China, it may save them much trouble”, commented by SeriousStrike.

“We appreciate their expertise in this matter and happy that we found SeriousStrike, we should have found them earlier but for future endeavors SeriousStrike is on speed dial!” Commented Reginald Fullmore, CEO of Cosmic Lite.

While looking, SeriousStrike also found 1,100 sites, or sites that use a product or trademark name, despite not being affiliated with the company that sells those items. Using data from Alexa, and cross-referencing domain owner data from the Whois directory, the law firm says those sites pull in a cumulative 19 million visits a year.

Law firm, forcus on intellectual property (trademark, patents etc.), help protecting brands.
