Penn Care to Offer Ambulances With New, Safer Diesel Engine

Niles, Ohio, February 10, 2010… Penn Care, Inc., reseller of high-quality, hand-crafted ambulances, announces that it will soon offer customers a “safer” ambulance engine alternative. The company sells industry leading ambulances from Braun and Medix. Forthcoming models in 2010 will be built on GM’s 6.6L Duramax turbo diesel V-8 engine that features the latest in emission control technology and fits commonly used ambulance chassis.

In 1986, majority of the ambulance chassis market changed to a diesel engine. This was to avoid frequent fires that were happening to emergency vehicles with excessive heat build-up in the old 460 gasoline engines. When ambulance manufacturers would build the ambulance on top of the gasoline chassis, it created an oven effect, trapping the engine heat. The diesel engine ran much cooler so that was the solution, but only temporarily.

Don Bloom, Vice President and co-owner of Penn Care, Inc. says, “Most engine manufacturers are not able to meet the new emission requirements for the diesel engine and have gone back to the gasoline engine. Although the newer engines run much cooler, the industry is now used to diesel engines. More importantly, there are distinct advantages of diesel for the ambulance application, like fuel economy and a longer engine life. The fact that GM is offering the ONLY diesel engine in that size of vehicle (6.6 L) will cause many ambulance manufacturers to switch to the new Duramax turbo diesel V-8 engine. Braun and Medix, the two leaders in ambulance manufacturing will both be available to Penn Care customers with the new, safer, post-emission diesel engine.”
