New Company Provides Educational Books for Emerging Adult Readers
Columbia, SC — Readable & Relevant Press, founded by award-winning writer Betsy Wolff, provides books to help young adult and adult readers improve their literacy skills. After working 25+ years as an advocate and social marketer in South Carolina’s poorest areas, Betsy Wolff created this new venture to help fill a long-standing need for practical, empowering books for people struggling with illiteracy.“In many situations I’ve encountered, I’ve been shocked by the lack of written materials for older teens and adults reading on a fourth to sixth grade level. Many people need basic but critical information that is still unavailable in a format they can comprehend,” Wolff said. “Improving literacy is essential in breaking the cycle of poverty that traps so many people.”
In response to soaring unemployment rates, Readable & Relevant Press released Henry Perry Gets a Job in December. It is written for young adults and adults seeking entry-level jobs and includes a story and valuable resource section. The book covers ways to find a job, how to dress for an interview, how to act when meeting a potential employer and more. A second book focused on job readiness will be available early in 2010.
“One in seven Americans is illiterate. That means more than 32 million people can’t fill out a job application or read instructions at work,” said Wolff. “The impact of illiteracy is profound, costing American businesses more than $60 billion a year in lost productivity and health and safety issues.”
Readable & Relevant Press (R&R) delivers attractive, 64-page books that educate, empower and entertain emerging young adult and adult readers. Books are available in English and Spanish and most have accompanying CD’s and teacher resource materials.
Books from Readable & Relevant Press are reviewed by content experts and members of the target audience to ensure accuracy and cultural relevance to readers’ needs. All books are excellent for use with ESL students and middle school students. Customization services are available and include the development of resource sections designed for specific areas, and articles about a particular organization and its services. Or, Readable & Relevant Press can build your customized low-literacy book from the ground up.
Betsy Wolff’s career includes increasing access to vital health and social services, leadership as a child advocate and grassroots lobbyist, and the creation and implementation of successful local, state and national social marketing campaigns. Betsy Wolff earned a master of public health degree from the University of South Carolina with a concentration in health promotion and education, as well as a bachelor’s degree in journalism and business administration from the University of Georgia. She has extensive experience writing educational materials, newsletters, articles and grants.
