Press release from: MGH Institute of Health Professions

BOSTON, MA - The three-week intersession break for students at MGH Institute of Health Professions was a welcome respite from the rigors of their studies at the health sciences graduate school.

Jennifer Bartecchi, a second year speech-language pathology student, took guitar lessons with her five-year-old son, Joey. “Last semester was very demanding, so I wanted to do something that was fun for both of us,” said Bartecchi, who then displayed on her phone a photo of her son holding a guitar and doing his best Joey Ramone impersonation.

For first-year Master of Science in Nursing student Sneha Rao, catching up on sleep was one of her main goals – and one she said she accomplished. “It was a perfect amount of time to be away, but now I’m glad to be back,” she said.

The Charlestown Navy Yard campus this week is busy once again as the school’s 900 students reacquainted themselves with graduate-level education in nursing, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and medical imaging.

More than 900 students attend the Boston school,a majority of whom are making a career change into health care. Students must have an existing Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field. The school also offers advanced degrees for current nurses and physical therapists.

While students at undergraduate schools begin a new term with a clean slate, that's not the case for many of the Institute's students. Megan Keating, who is in the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, had a math medicine test her first day back. “It went fine,” she said, while studying in the Ruth Sleeper Learning Center, “but it was nice to be way from the books for a bit.”

Fellow BSN student Lindsey Butterfield, who spent much of her intersession working as a certified nursing assistant, was encouraged that she and the other 85 students in the 14-month program were entering their last semester of studies. “We can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” she said with a smile. “It feels great.”

Boston Water Ban Has Minimal Effect at MGH Institute graduate school
If there ever was a good time to have a mandated water usage ban at the MGH Institute’s Charlestown Navy Yard campus, this is the week for it. Normally, the Boston health sciences graduate school would have hundreds of nursing, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology students in class with their professors. But most people are off campus this week as the school prepares for its 30th Commencement ceremony this Saturday, May
