Fluorometer or fluorimeter is an instrument used for luminescence analysis. It measures the intensity of luminescence. A fluorometer contains a source for exciting the luminescence and a photometer. Fluorometers quantify, detect, and monitor analytes and their reactions by measuring the fluorescent signal from dyes attached to biologic molecules as well as naturally fluorescent molecules, based on wavelengths of excitation and emission.

Fluorescence analysis is more sensitive and specific than other techniques. Also, it conserves the sample. Fluorometers detect low concentrations of biologically active compounds such as proteins, nucleic acids, hormones, drugs, and microorganisms. Fluorometers enable the testing sample to be analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Fluorescent compounds form unique excitation and emission spectra by coupling with other molecules to form a fluorescent compound. On the other hand, certain molecules are inherently fluorescent. No two compounds have the same fluorescence and this makes fluorometry a highly specific analytical method.
