Press release from: Zumtobel Lighting GmbH

At the beginning of January, the world’s tallest building by far was inaugurated in Dubai. 828 metres high, "Burj Khalifa" has more than 160 floors. When the weather is clear, the skyscraper, which rises up to the sky between the sea and the desert, can be seen from a distance of almost 100 kilometres. Spacecannon, a company of the Zumtobel brand, staged a spectacular lighting show for the impressive launch event. Under the direction of Prisme International, and in collaboration with Procon Hamburg and Playback Istanbul, spacecannon has provided 300 Ireos spotlights with 7000 W each to highlight the building’s huge dimensions. As a special attraction, the world’s strongest searchlight - Ramses 2, boasting an installed lamp load of 72000 W - was presented for the first time.

The Y-shaped floor plan of the mega tower, which was designed by American architect Adrian Smith, is reminiscent of a desert lily. The tower tapers in an upward spiralling pattern. It was precisely this spectacular design that was to be highlighted by the lighting show at the launch event.

By setting the lighting stage for Burj Khalifa, spacecannon implemented the largest installation in the company’s history. Comments Peter Roos, Managing Director: "With this large-scale illumination project we have once again demonstrated that we are a professional partner for superior architectural presentation. We use conventional light sources but also state-of-the-art LED technology."

Spacecannon, which is based in Fubine/Italy, specialises in sophisticated presentations of architecture and interactive media façades. With spacecannon’s custom-designed lighting solutions and control systems, Zumtobel has added innovative outdoor luminaires mainly based on LED technology to its high-quality luminaire portfolio, thus becoming a full-line supplier of integral lighting solutions for professional indoor and outdoor lighting.

Zumtobel is an internationally leading supplier of integral lighting solutions for a wide variety of applications. "We want to use light to create worlds of experience, make work easier and improve communications and safety while remaining fully aware of our responsibility to the environment." This is the vision Zumtobel, a Zumtobel Group company, has been following for more than 50 years, developing innovative and individual lighting solutions that fulfil every requirement as regards ergonomics, economic efficiency and environmental compatibility and create added value in terms of aesthetics.
