Visualisation platform MOSArt works with the VxWorks653 (ARINC 653) real-time operating system and the Workbench development environment

Barco, a Belgium-based specialist for display and visualisation solutions, is committed to the Wind River Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653 for the MOSArt modular open system architecture. MOSArt is the hardware platform developed by Barco for the development and operation of real-time display solutions in aircraft. It allows manufacturers of aircraft components to develop and integrate standardised applications. The Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653 for MOSArt provides the components RTOS VxWorks653 and the development environment Wind River Workbench, along with network stacks and middleware. Using Wind River's Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653 enables Barco to develop its display solutions in faster cycles - in each case with ultra-modern hardware and to the highest standard.

Wind River's RTOS VxWorks653 complies with the ARINC 653-1 standard for the development of safety-critical systems. The Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653 can be supplied with DO-178B certification documentation. The DO-178B standard defines the planning, development and test procedures for the software employed in aircraft. In this way, VxWorks653 guarantees the ability to certify various applications with different levels of criticality.

MOSArt provides manufacturers engaged in the aviation industry with an ARINC 653-compliant complete package for application development and integration at the highest level. In this regard, the Wind River Workbench supplies pre-integrated tools for streamlining and accelerating development and integration processes, allowing the manufacturers to concentrate on their core expertise.

One special feature of the Wind River platform is the pre-implemented health management functionality. This checks and monitors the stability of the hardware and operating system and that the application software is free of errors during run-time. In the event of irregularities (e.g. time-outs), this function decides - on the basis of the significance of the error for the overall system - as to how to deal with the error and on the possibility of escalation. The implementation of the health management function by Wind River saves MOSArt users the need to have detailed knowledge of the components they are supplied with and the need for coordination with the hardware suppliers and, as such, time and money.
