In March 2018, Chinese in-vitro diagnostics company (Righton) and Akonni Biosystems Inc: came into a commercial agreement, which enables Righton to sell Akonni's TruDiagnosis and TruTip nucleic acid purification kits in China. TruDiagnosis offers on-slide PCR and gel-drop microarray technology. Thermo Fisher Scientific and Illumina, Inc in January 2018 signed an agreement. In this agreement, Thermo Fisher will provide Ion AmpliSeq technology to Illumina for research purpose.

According to World Health Organization, when a woman is infected with the rubella virus early in pregnancy, she has a 90% chance of passing the virus to her fetus. This can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or severe birth defects known as congenital rubella syndrome. Before the introduction of the vaccine, up to 4 babies in every 1000 live births were born with congenital rubella syndrome.
