Pros of hiring a union based contractor

07-12-2018 10:55 AM CET | Industry, Real Estate & Construction

Press release from: G-P Concrete, LLC

Union contractors offer 2 main advantages:

Expertise. Union workers tend to be very skilled workers who have been trained to perform specific job functions. If you're looking for a generalist, a union contractor may not be the best person for the job. But if you're looking for workers with a depth of expertise in a specific field, union contractors can usually fit the bill.

Experience. Along with expertise, union contractors are known for employing some of the industry's most experienced workers. Although not all of the contractor's workers will have the same level of experience, unions are meticulous about apprenticeship programs and other strategies that pair younger workers with experienced veterans.

"I’ve had contractors say to me, 'I’d rather hire a union guy because a young (worker) coming out of the union is going to know more than someone who has just been working at various jobs (in the industry).'" And on some huge projects with liquidated damages, Baylis said it’s even more critical to get the work right the first time.

There is evidence to suggest that union crews actually have a higher productivity rate because they have lower turnover — which leads to familiarity with how the job runs.
Many private and government organizations require the employment of union workers for any building or construction work, as their credentials and licenses are more easily verified.

How to Find a Quality Contractor - Look for certain qualities & qualifications in contractors.

Have the necessary qualifications, as required by state or federal law
Be licensed/registered
Have references
Have a local address
Claim membership in certain professional organizations
Be knowledgeable about the work
Have good communication skills

Check out references and view completed projects if possible. Before offering payment, have a signed agreement in place and see what kind of warranties the contractor offers. Decide on a budget and make sure that the contractor is responsible enough not to go over budget or leave the project incomplete. It is always a good idea to get a couple of bids from different people and go through all the details and fine print. Don’t hire a contractor who is soliciting business door to door, or asks for cash in advance.
