Taiwan government launches e-book industry development program
At its weekly meeting on December 3, the Cabinet reviewed a report drawn up by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) entitled “Status of Promotion of the Electronic Publishing Industry” and approved its proposal for the government to earmark more than NT$2 billion (US$66 million) over the next five years to promote development of the e-publishing industry.Premier Wu Den-yih said that amid the trend toward digital convergence, the future holds enormous business opportunities for the e-publishing industry. He stated that Taiwan should make the best use of its advantages in information and communications technology (ICT) and combine the efforts of its public and private sectors to energetically promote development of the industry. The premier directed the MOEA to assist enterprises involved in the production of e-readers, including ultrathin “e-paper” displays, to develop and commercialize critical technologies, integrate resources and secure patents. The government, he added, should help them conform with international and cross-strait standards so as to fully realize their potential in the global marketplace.
Building on a solid foundation that includes e-paper manufacturers who hold key proprietary technologies and are now ramping up their production capacities as well as progress in Taiwan-mainland China negotiations on technical standards, said the MOEA, the government will pursue a fourfold strategy with the aim of boosting the nation’s e-publishing industry revenues to NT$100 billion (US$3 billion) in 2013: enhance the global competitiveness of Taiwan’s e-publishing industry; promote technological innovation to strengthen the industry’s “ecology;” encourage the expansion of Chinese-language digital content; and foster a superior “digital reading society.”
Remarking that development of the e-publishing industry is intertwined with development of Taiwan’s “soft economy,” the MOEA said the government will steadily encourage the industry’s R&D innovation and sophistication. Looking down the road, Taiwan can look forward to unlimited vistas for marriage of its hardware and software resources and development of its digital content businesses, taking its ICT industry to ever higher plateaus of value creation.
The Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) also noted that the Executive Yuan intends to establish a center for cloud computing in view of this technology’s revolutionary implications for the ICT industry. It is hoped that Taiwan can thereby take part in developing next-generation supercomputers while continuing to advance its wireless broadband technology.
