Ilmenite is magnetic and is separated from other minerals using magnetic separators. Ilmenite is processed into synthetic rutile and used as a feedstock in the production of titanium pigment. Conversion of ilmenite to synthetic rutile increases the titanium dioxide concentration in the mineral.
