Young people enjoying a Futureversity course

Young people across Greenwich can develop their skills during the summer holidays with free courses and activities organised by Futureversity.

The innovative youth charity is back with another bumper summer programme for 11-19 year olds (or up to 25 for those with disabilities), funded by the Royal Borough of Greenwich. This year there are over 60 courses to choose from, covering everything from music and performing arts, to art, fashion, business skills, fitness and wellbeing.

For the first time Futureversity is also offering a motivational careers guidance and mentoring workshop, ‘Launch Your Career in 5 Days’. Designed by The Mentoring Lab, the workshop will provide information, advice and guidance to young people ready to progress their career, regardless of their background or personal history.

All courses and activities offer unique opportunities for young people who live, work or study in the borough to learn valuable new skills and develop their potential, while having fun and making new friends.

The free activities and courses run from 23 July to 17 August and all courses are inclusive, all-ability and run by industry professionals. Ranging from sushi making to get into law and making a pair of shoes to parkour and powerboating, there is something for everyone.

This year, there are also 10 courses exclusively for young people with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND). These include an experimental art workshop, cheerleading, rock climbing and prototyping an app.

Councillor David Gardner, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Schools, said: “Futureversity’s fantastic range of courses and activities offer something for everyone. We hope that even more children and young people will be able to develop skills and boost their CVs, which will act as a springboard into their future careers.”

Elaine Thomas, Futureversity Programmes Manager, said: “Each year Futureversity provides fun, positive, impactful programmes for all young people during the summer holiday. As experts in giving young people opportunities to try new and exciting activities, the summer programme enhances the importance of lifelong learning and stimulates young people’s motivation to do well when they return to education in September. This year we have inspiring activities for all abilities and are delighted to continue our positive work across the borough.”

Courses take place at different times and venues across Greenwich and central London. Bookings opened on 25 June. For the full course programme and to book, visit www.futureversity.org or call 020 7247 7900.

Futureversity delivers award-winning free courses and activities for young people to help them develop skills and self-belief they need to make the most of their lives. Piloted as a crime prevention initiative in Tower Hamlets in 1995 (as Summer University), today the charity delivers learning opportunities to hundreds of young people across London in partnership with businesses and industry professionals. Their Vacation Education programme targets young people with the highest level of need to help them develop the key skills and capabilities needed to secure employment, building self-awareness, resilience, drive, receptiveness, self-assuredness and being informed http://www.futureversity.org.
