Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) as the name recommends is a monitoring technique which refers to a group of procedures used during surgery to monitor neural pathways during high-risk neurosurgical, orthopedic, peripheral nerve, and vascular surgeries. These procedures help surgeons in avoiding damage and preserving functionality of the nervous system. IONM is used in most of the surgical procedures. It is directly intended at reducing the risk of neurological deficits after operations that involve the nervous system. IONM has evolved during the last two decades. The use of IONM offers a possibility to detect injuries before they become so severe that they cause deficits after the operation. Introduction of IONM has reduced the risk of debilitating deficits such as muscle weakness, paralysis, hearing loss, and other loss of normal body functions.

The market is segmented into In-house, Out-sourced and Tele-Health. In-house IONM is the concept where the hospitals or the treatment centers develop their own infrastructure to support all the requirements needed to carry out IONM procedures. IONM requires heavy investments for the monitoring equipment and facilities. Hospitals need to hire the skilled and certified staff and invest a great amount of money in building infrastructure. Currently most of the IONM procedures carried out in-house where the hospitals take the responsibility of the monitoring the patients throughout their treatment or surgery. But the trend is now shifting towards outsourced IONM. Outsourcing is mostly the collaboration of the company with the third-party vendors to complete a specific task. Now the trend in IONM is shifting towards outsourcing of IONM procedures. Hospitals outsource IONM procedures to the third-party vendors who already have the appropriate infrastructure to carry out the procedures. These vendors have the highly skilled staff to operate and manage these procedures during surgeries or the patient treatment. Outsourcing IONM procedures offer hospitals an opportunity to reduce their huge expenses. Hence lot of hospitals are opting for outsourcing of IONM procedures. Tele-Health is a process where the patient is being treated at certain place and the IONM specialist is at different place. The IONM specialist monitors the condition of the patient from the long distance with the help of internet services. Specialist works on the results from the process at his place and then sends these results to the doctor who is treating the patient. Then the doctor can take the decisions according to the IONM results. Tele-Health service helps a great deal in cases of lesser availability of the IONM specialists.
