Digital glass cockpit systems have become an effective means for defense authorities to enhance the capabilities of their aircraft. For example, in 2008, United Airlines Flight 731 experienced a glass-cockpit blackout and thereby it loses all of its attitude indicators, radios, traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS), transponders, and half of the electronic centralized aircraft monitor (ECAM) displays. However, due to the presence of backup analog displays for critical flight instruments such as the airspeed indicator and altimeter, the pilots were able to land the aircraft successfully at Newark Airport without radio contact. With the facilitation of global positioning system (GPS) in aircraft, the pilot workload is significantly reduced with increased situational awareness, and safety.

In 2010, 5,516 glass cockpit and 2,848 conventionally equipped US general aviation aircraft experienced 266 accidents, where the glass cockpit aircraft experienced a lower accident rate compared to conventional aircraft. Based on this observation, US NTSB made recommendations to the FAA on glass cockpits, in the same year.

In addition, the glass cockpits have been certified by FAA at low cost, and the organization encourages the development and installation of the glass cockpits in aircraft, to enhance safety. As a result, the vendors invest in creating digital glass cockpits that are installed in a variety of aircraft without unnecessary certifications bearing high costs.
